Waves in statistics
Lively Data : February 15, 2005
Wave heights, like sea surface heigths, can be used for statistical studies. General trend studies are indeed one of the main use for altimetric wave heights. If we have a look at these over the whole oceans, we can clearly see where waves are the highest (in the Southern Ocean, where they stay rather high at all time), the most variable (in the North Atlantic, where waves can be low on summer, but high in winter), or calm areas (in the tropical zone).
Statistical over the Jason-1 significant wave height, made from the LAS. Up, minimum and maximum heights; bottom, mean and variance over a year. Those maps are plotted using the "Define variable" option in the LAS menu (see Lively data, June 30, 2003 for the way to plot such maps).
