Doris on Jason-2: Seven at one blow!

Category: News of the Jason-2 mission

The Doris instrument onboard Jason-2 was the first to be switch on, on June 20 night. Now, nearly ten days after, the new functionnalities available on this new version of the instrument are being tested, with success.

Map of the Doris beacons seen by Jason-2 from June 26, 2008, 12 h up to June 27 (the two red dots are out-of-order beacons).

The Doris instrument onboard Jason-2 has several improvements with respect to Jason-1. Among them, it has the capability of receiving and processing onboard as many as seven beacons at the same time (vs. two for Jason-1). This leads to a much higher number of data processed, and should lead to an even better orbit determination. An increase in the number of beacons could also be envisioned.
